3 months – 5 years and philosophy of education. The Challenges for today’s parents are enormous. Toddler
(12 – 24 months)
The first to the second year of a child’s life is the most crucial stage of the child’s development. This is because the child absorbs his environment every second and it is whatever the child absorbs that he/she uses in the construction of his/her personality in life.
Babies and toddlers are sensorial learners. They learn through the use of their senses ( Touch, Taste, Sight, Sound and Smell).
Since children in their early years are sensorial learners, and they depend solely on the adults around them, the mothers and educarers must offer them rich and balanced experiences by providing the right environment for them to do so. Our focus at D-Ivy Early years and Primary is on the child, therefore, we have made provision for a very rich and prepared environment for the children to have balanced experiences that will enable them grow into positive personalities.
PRE-NURSERY
(2- 3 years)
The knowledge and understanding of a pre-nursery child increases as he/she progresses from the second year to the third year. The child has now become naturally curious about his/her environment. He/she can now confidently walk, run, tiptoe, manage the stairway, ride a tricycle with pedals, build blocks, thread large beads into a shoelace, use a scissors and enjoy painting with a brush, etc.
Many of the children are able to play together in smaller groups and have also developed some imaginary friends.
They can share their things with others, can recognize letters, recite and count numbers 1-10, can name objects/things that are familiar.
They also ask questions such as: ‘what is this’,’why’ etc. They can match primary colours and spot objects into categories.
NURSERY
(3-4 Years)
A child of three (3) – four (4) years has began to understand the concept of time, has more comprehension about what happened and what will happen, can understand the concept of quantity (more, a lot).
His/her vocabulary has increasingly developed with more words and able to make simple sentences. Language is also developing and he/she uses these to express him/herself and make friends.
The child at this age is able to share things with others and enjoy a make believe play with other children.
They are usually happier than their previous years and are helpful in behaviour to others.
it is an age of ‘i can do it myself’.
Because of the tremendous increase in the overall (physical, cognitive, language, emotional and social) development at this stage, relevant experiences that are needed to meet the developmental requirements are provided at the school.
Activities and exercises that teach concepts are also part of the curriculum. Reading of picture books, introduction and use of art materials (paper, glue, blunt scissors, paints, etc), practical life activities such as sweeping, brushing of teeth, etc. These shall be done using real life materials prepared to their sizes to allow exploration. There shall be make believe plays (role play drama) by the children, playing games with numbers and naming of their body parts in the play.
The teachers/ directress will listen to what interests the children and will talk with them and not talk down on them but to direct their learning and equally show them good behavior as role models. The children shall be allowed to make mistakes and will be motivated with encouraging words. Lessons on grace and courtesy are very key at this stage.
All the above and much more are primarily designed to support the early years children to learn at their pace and from their interest with our well trained, experienced, God-fearing teachers at D-ivy School.
RECEPTION
(4-5 Years)
The curriculum at the reception class is a continuation of the gains from the early years of the Montessori style to the early years foundation stage (EYFS) of the English National curriculum.
Children at this stage are taught seven (7) areas of learning specified by the early years foundation stage (EYFS) guidance.
The first crucial areas of learning at the early years foundation stage are:
Communication and Language
Physical development
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
These three areas of learning help the children to build their capacity to learn and develop relationships as they get prepared for their next level of schooling; Year 1.
The other four important areas of learning are:
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design
The application of these four areas further helps to strengthen the child in the use of the three crucial areas of learning earlier mentioned, taking into consideration the needs, interest and stage of development of each of the children in the class.
The School will adopt a holistic approach across the seven (7) areas of learning by following topic based learning , using both structured and unstructured activities to a more formal approach in preparation for their entry into the primary (Year one).
